PORTUGAL
Salazar was nominated Minister of Finances in 1928 and came to power as President and Prime-Minister in 1932.
His purpose was to restore the idea of Portugal as a Colonial Empire, and to do so he manipulated arts, especially architecture, to convey that feeling of superiority and immortality.
The most important architects at this time were Cottinelli Telmo, Pardal Monteiro and Duarte Pacheco.
The following are example of that:
· First Colonial Exhibition, 1934 (Crystal Palace, Porto)
· Portuguese World Exhibition, 1940 (Bethlehem)
· On the Education field:
Primary Schools
University City
Instituto Superior Técnico (1927-37, project by Pardal Monteiro, first director was the engineer Duarte Pacheco, also the Minister of the Public Works at the time)
· To entertain and control workers, so that they wouldn´t think about what Salazar was doing and to keep them mindless, FNAT was created (Fundação Nacional para a Alegria no Trabalho). They still exist today, all around the country, but have a totally apolitical agenda, as hotels, camping parks and recreative-areas for older people. Former FNAT are now called INATEL.
· Health (Feminine cares and assistance in pregnancy):
Maternity Alfredo da Costa, Lisbon (1932), was the first Maternity in Portugal.
Maternity Júlio Dinis, Porto (1938), was built with donations of influent women of that city.
· Building and reconstructing roads (the Portuguese high-way saga began here)
· Bridges:
Salazar (named 25 de Abril after the Revolution), Lisbon
Arrábida, over Douro, Porto
· Jamor National Stadium
Portela National Airport
Vanda Pedro
